I've been a science/mathematics teacher educator at SMEC since 1985. I'm particularly keen to assist teachers to develop curricular and teaching practices that empower their own students to become critical, reflective and communicative learners with a keen sense of their own intellectual, emotional, moral, political agency so that they become active participants in democratic processes of social and cultural transformation. My research interests include: Culture Studies in Science/Mathematics Education, Research as/for Transformative Professional Development, and Autobiographical/Narrative/Impressionistic Genres of Research Writing. My teaching and research are driven by transformative interests that situate the personal in social, cultural, historical, philosophical and political contexts. My professional values derive from the culture of freedom and dissent of the '60s. My doctoral study wove the transformative power of radical constructivism and the democratic philosophy of Habermas’s theory of communicative action into a 'critical constructivist' perspective which I still find quite useful. Outside of the university, I am a family man (with a partner and 3 young children in a blended family), I practice yoga and go for the occasional jog or mountain bike ride. I draw inspiration from Nature (Shizen!), art, music, literature, Buddhism, Hinduism and year-round surfing. As an ex-Melbournian I'm passionate about the Bombers! The official SMEC web site will tell you that I have an appointment as Associate Professor at SMEC. My own web site might provide some other interesting insights into my working life, including recent publications. Namaste Peter
